EXCLUSIVE: SHAW TO ANNOUNCE NEW PRESIDENCY: DR. ALVIN THORNTON OF HOWARD TOP CHOICE: Source The Wilmington Journal (I Like what he said about today’s crisis in 2006 but it is still the same in 2010)

The Wilmington Journal has confirmed that Shaw University’s Board of Trustees is expected to officially announce as early as next week that interim President Dr. Dorothy Cowser Yancy is stepping down after more than a year at the helm.

Sources in Raleigh, and in Washington, D.C., also exclusively confirm to The Wilmington Journal that, unless difficulties arise, the board is expected to present Dr. Alvin Thornton, formerly the interim provost and chief academic officer at Howard University, as the new president of the 144-year-old historically black institution. Dr. Thornton is a well-respected veteran member of the academic community, best known in Maryland for heading up a pioneering state commission on educational reform. (Source: The Wilmington Journal)

Note: Dr. Thornton is right on target because I agree with him 100% when he says, “Today’s crisis is not only of our children; the crisis is of ourselves — we aren’t doing anything,” Thornton told the Prince George’s Chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference during its King Day celebration dinner in January 2006. ‘‘We must get and do something and our children will follow.” But the sad part is there are some folks who tries to do things but other folks don’t support them and criticize them instead of getting involved. Raleigh NC – Shaw president ‘lost his credibility’

It is sad when a person see they are not productive but continues to hold people right where they are. Why in the hell didn’t he resign? Maybe there is a reason why. C. Dancy II – DCN Publisher

Under President Clarence Newsome, Shaw University saw ballooning debt, decaying dormitories, everyday expenses paid on credit, and a graduation rate that hovers around 36 percent.

Conditions at the private school so disturbed alumni that in March, the Greensboro chapter stopped donating or raising money for their alma mater. (News & Observer)
