RALEIGH – N.C. House Speaker Thom Tillis on Thursday defended payments to two high-level staff members who resigned because of inappropriate relationships with lobbyists, suggesting the money in part compensated them for working for free at the start of their tenures. (More)

One of the more unfortunate victims of the state’s recent budget shortfall seems like it might be getting another chance at life.
In looking for a way out of a $2.5 billion budget hole that didn’t involve raising taxes, the Republican-led legislature chose to put the chopping block to good use this past summer. (Read more)
