Tarboro NC – Edgecombe unemployment up to 15.7%

After two months of decline, Edgecombe County’s unemployment rate increased in May from 15.2 to 15.7 percent, according to statistics released Friday by the state’s Employment Security Commission.

Eighty-two of North Carolina’s 100 counties experienced an unemployment increase in May. (The Daily Southerner)

Raleigh NC – N.C. jobless rate hits 9.7 percent

RALEIGH — North Carolina unemployment soared to 9.7 percent in January as the number of people without work remained at an all-time high.

That’s the highest joblessness since March 1983, when unemployment was 10 percent, and a 1.6 percentage point jump from December, according to data released this morning by the N.C. Employment Security Commission. (News & Observer)
