Dear Friends,
I was moved by Sen. McKissick’s statement the other day and Rep. Adams’ powerful email last week (click here to read it) about how disrespectful and hostile Republicans in the North Carolina General Assembly have been on issues important to the African American community.
It is important that everyone be aware that Pat McCrory, the Republican who ran against Governor Perdue in 2008 and who wants to challenge her again next year, is among the Republican leaders who have steadfastly opposed us on issues our community cares about:
- McCrory led the fight to pass a bill that could disenfranchise hundreds of thousands of legitimate and eligible African American voters by forcing people to show a government issued photo ID before voting — remember, African American active voters are almost 50% more likely not to have a government issued photo ID than other active voters; and
- McCrory was a cheerleader for the Republican budget, which is inflicting deep and unnecessary cuts on public schools (including pre-k programs), colleges and universities — cuts which have cost our state thousands of teacher and teacher assistant positions, led to higher class sizes, and threatened our ability to prepare our children for the future.
We must not tolerate the kind of disrespect shown by McCrory and other Republican leaders. For instance, just days ago, Senator Bob Rucho (R-Mecklenburg) insulted Floyd McKissick, Chairman of the North Carolina Legislative Black Caucus, by saying he is "full of hot air."
McCrory has also made offensive comments about African American leaders. McCrory said, "I’ve always wondered if the black political Caucus is overrated because most of these organizations are really five or six people that have a good title."
Governor Perdue has consistently been on the right side of issues that are important to the African American community. Pat McCrory, on the other hand, has been insensitive to the needs of our community.
Please continue to stand with Governor Perdue, Sen. McKissick, Rep. Adams and me as we fight for a better future for North Carolina.
Representative Henry M. "Mickey" Michaux, Jr.
