From The Publisher – Community Meetings Folks Stay In Your Lane

Posted by Curmilus Dancy II (Butch) on October 19, 2009

I get so sick and tired of going to meetings that are unorganized and anything goes. I believe in having structural meetings that are to the point and no time wasted. I believe in starting on time and ending on time unless there is a motion to extend the meeting for an X amount of time.

When I have chaired meetings in the past I have an agenda and on my agenda I have what I am going to say at the specified points outlined on the agenda. This way I do not get off track and make up mess as I go along. I am in control of my meetings and people will not talk without addressing the chair. We will stick to the agenda.

I have seen so many folks whom say they are about business that do not know how and do not try to learn how to carry out a meeting. This I have witnessed in various meetings and even in the church. Do not mention Robert Rules of Order because they don’t know anything about them. If one is going to chair meetings on a regular basis they ought to buy a copy of the latest Robert’s Rules of Order so they can stay in their lane. So many people operate outside of their lane so meetings normally are not productive and the majority of the time they become long and drawn out. Oh yeah something gets done but many leave with questions in the back of their heads because they are left confused.

When I go to meetings now I try not to say anything because I am serious and do not get distracted with all the waste that takes place. In other words I stay focused. I see so much mess that happens throughout the meeting that is just totally waste so I try to wait until the end of the meeting to make my comments.

Nope not saying I know it all but I do know that I know what I know and I will challenge folks when it comes to meetings, politics and other that I have been involved in since the early 90’s. I have learned to stay in my lane and refuse to allow anyone to push me in another lane. When I am ready to change lanes I will do that on my own and not when others say change.

Do you know what lane you are in? Do you know when you need to change lanes? Will you allow others to push you in another lane?

I ain’t the one!! So don’t push me.
