I can’t name the surprise guests so let me tell you about the scheduled performers. Hosting the Juneteenth Celebration are two very funny men – Grave Digger (ComicView and BET) and Les Long (The Les Long Show).
The Opening Ceremony features Miss Black NC USA 2010 RaSheeda Waddell and gospel recording artist Gerald Hinton performing a set that includes his hit single "The Battle is Not Over."
Opening and closing the show are two of the best bands in the area: The Stanley Baird Group (jazz) kicks things off and Johnny White & The Elite Band (R&B) finishes it up, going on at 7:15 pm.
Gary Jones aka Special Gee (Tremors, Plum Crazy and K97.5 Mix show) will bring the old school flavor while presenting the new sounds of Y-Rag Entertainment Music Group featuring:
Sandra Dubose Gibson (R&B)
Sonja (Neo-Soul)
Chenire (Smooth R&B)
Lock (Rap)
Casino Crisis (Rap)
Q (R&B/soul)
Not to be missed are the performances by Jerome Waller & Anointed Praise, gospel group with a full band, and R&B recording artist MarQuetta, known as the Songbird of the South, working it out on stage with her dancers. Both of these acts are bound for the top!
Juneteenth is the celebration of the ending of slavery in the US. Often cited as the African American Independence Day, the celebration of Juneteenth originates from Galveston, Texas, where on June 19th, 1865, the word of the Emancipation Proclamation reached the enslaved. North Carolina was the 26th state to recognize Juneteenth as a state holiday or a state holiday observance.
Just like the celebration in Texas in 1865, the 6th Annual NC Juneteenth Celebration will have plenty of fabulous food and lots activities for children of all ages.
Addressing the needs of our community today, the festival will include health screenings and exhibitors with information you can use.
