- On July 23, we are hosting a hip-hop workshop, led by Pierce Freelon and his band the Beast. The workshop is open to young people between the ages of 12 and 18; the workshop begins at 2pm and will run until 4:30pm, during which time participants will develop an understanding of African American music, from Spirituals to Hip-Hop. The workshop incorporates interactive lecture, music/lyrics and coded language analysis, group discussion and live performance. Students will create their own original music, and have the opportunity to perform onstage prior to that evening’s Downtown Live Outdoor Concert. The workshop is $20/person; space is limited. To register or for more information, please call 972-1163, or by stopping by the Arts Center.
- Auditions are coming up for Having Our Say, by Emily Mann, adapted from the book Having Our Say by Sarah L. and A. Elizabeth Delany with Amy Hill Hearth, based on the lives of Sadie and Bessie Delany. 103-year-old Sadie Delany and 101-year-old Bessie Delany take us on a remarkable journey a fascinating series of events and anecdotes drawn from their rich family history and careers as pioneering African-American professionals. The play calls for two strong African American women. The production opens on Friday, Sep. 18th, and runs for two weekends. Auditions take place at 7pm on August 5 & 6, in the theatre of the Imperial Centre. For more information or to borrow a copy of the script, please call David at 972-1156.
