Raleigh, N.C. — A former Highway Patrol trooper said he felt pressure from his superiors to file a cursory accident report following a 1995 wreck involving then-Sen. Beverly Perdue, according to an internal affairs report obtained Thursday by WRAL Investigates. (Read more)

Gov. Perdue names Gilchrist as new Highway Patrol commander–Source: News & Observer

Gov. Bev Perdue today appointed Lt. Colonel Michael W. Gilchrist as head of the N.C. Highway Patrol.

Gilchrist, a Plymouth native, has served on the patrol since 1986. Prior to his promotion, he was second-in-command to Col. Randy Glover.

Glover resigned after 10 months on the job. During his tenure, there were several embarrassing disclosures about misconduct by troopers under his command. (Read more)

Judge rules on trooper text messages – Source: News & Observer

RALEIGH — A Wake County Superior Court judge ruled today that personal text messages sent by a state highway patrol employee from her personal phone to her immediate supervisor on his state-issued BlackBerry are not public records.

Judge Paul Gessner issued his findings in a brief order that does not elaborate on his reasons for his conclusion. (Read more @ The News & Observer)

Search for new leader may go outside highway patrol – Source: The News & Observer

RALEIGH — As Gov. Bev Perdue begins her search for new leadership at the N.C. Highway Patrol, a key decision will be whether to look outside the troubled agency for its new commander.

A 1975 state law requires the governor to promote someone from within the same ranks where problems with trooper misconduct forced Friday’s resignation of Col. Randy Glover after only 10 months in the top job. (Read more @ The News & Observer)

Randy Glover’s loyalty to the N.C. Highway Patrol has never wavered.

The smarts and determination that helped lead him to its top spot also helped him make a major decision Friday. The embattled colonel of the state’s elite police unit announced he would retire from his position as commander, handing in his resignation to Gov. Bev Perdue in a morning meeting.
