LILLINGTON — Harnett County’s recently resigned elections director on Monday said she could not stay silent on the issue of gay marriage — a dilemma that caused her to leave her post as of Jan. 3.
In a statement appearing on bluenc.com, which identifies itself as an "independent website for progressive politics in North Carolina," Sherre Toler said it was impossible to stay in her job because she could not openly oppose an upcoming referendum. The May initiative allows voters to weigh in on a law, potentially defining marriage as between a man and a woman, and Toler said, "I cannot and will not be a party to such actions." (More)
