Congratulations Tarboro Defeats Mountain Heritage In Football 2-A State Championship

The Vikings only lost of the season was to SouthWest Edgecombe Cougars but they went on to defeat the Mountain Heritage Cougars 28 – 3 to win the title.

Football Friday: Southern Nash, Tarboro and North Edgecombe will play in round 4 tonight

Wishing all the area teams make it to the state playoff game on next week.

Southern Nash No. 11 seed will travel to South Johnston No. 1 seed.

Tarboro No. 7 seed will travel to East Bladen No. 1 seed.

North Edgecombe No. 7 seed will travel to Wallace-Rolls Hill No. 4 seed.

I Agree With Calvin Adkins Daily Southerner Sports Editor On The Football Coach of The Year

I totally agree with Adkins on this one. I feel that Coach Danny Ward deserved the coach of the year. If Ward and Cobb records were somewhat identical then maybe I could go along with the group that chose Cobb.

I met a young man recently whom played football and graduated from North Edgecombe several years ago. We talked about North Edgecombe, Tarboro and SouthWest all being in the playoffs. But one thing that stuck with me is that this former football player said that Coach Danny Ward used to be at Phillips Middle School and he would teach the young males the fundamentals and skills before they move on to North Edgecombe High School under Coach Cobb. The former football player stated now Coach Ward has to do it all at the high school, teach them the fundamentals and the skills.

I have known Coach Ward for several years because of my traveling the county attending sporting events. Ward and I both served on the Edgecombe County Recreational Advisory Committee several years ago and I got to know him more in depth.

One good thing about the northern end of the county they have a black male Coach Ward who can relate and inspire the young black males in the poorest area of the county.

Football Saturday: SouthWest Edgecombe Football Team Made History When They Defeated Jacksonville Northside on Saturday Night In Playoff Game 2

The SouthWest Cougars football team made history on Saturday night when they defeated Jacksonville Northside 28 – 0. Jacksonville Northside is now (9 – 4) and SWE is (13 – 0) with the longest winning season in the school’s history.

SWE defense was on the money. The score shows what the offense did. Someone sitting behind me said they thought this was the best defensive game SWE had however someone said other than when they played Hunt. I didn’t attend that game so I don’t have an opinion.

SWE will host the Reidsville Rams on Friday night after Thanksgiving November 27, 2009. Reidsville have won 45 consecutive games, the fourth longest streak in high school football.

Video of the record setting game should be up within the next 24 – 48 hours.

Friday night’s game was postponed due to wet field. Game will be played on Saturday at 7 PM.

Because of the weather the local high school games will be played on Saturday November 14, 2009. SouthWest will play at 7:00 PM 30 minutes earlier than the normal 7:30 PM time. See related story for more information about SouthWest and the other local schools.
