As you so well noted, the educational problems facing this country, particularly our educators dedicated to teaching minority and poor children, are formidable. And it certainly is not lost on me the sincere efforts by people in many professions — political and nonpolitical — have made for years to address and alleviate the mounting problems. For those 80% of students who graduate, some might say those efforts paid off. But for the portion of that 80% who graduate, but can’t read; or, the 20% who dropout, I join with concerned citizens who say: "It is time for a change." We must try new, innovative, creative, and focused methods and techniques to academically strengthen those at-risk youth and help them develop into grounded, productive citizens. We owe it to the children to try something new.
I look forward to attending whatever forums, workshops, and/or programs, but not to talk about the problems. We know what the problems are. It’s time to put forth well-thought out solutions to solve the problems.
Again, thank you for your encouragement.
