Early College Recognized by State Superintendent

For immediate release on Friday, October 14, 2011

State Superintendent June Atkinson was joined by Lt. Governor Walter Dalton and State Board of Education Chairman Bill Harrison in recognizing Edgecombe Early College High School and 31 other high schools for having the highest four- year cohort graduation rates in the state in the 2010-11 school year at a ceremony in Raleigh on Oct. 11.

Early College Principal Sherita Cobb and Dr. Del Burns, interim superintendent at ECPS traveled to the Sheraton Imperial Hotel where Dr. Atkinson presented Cobb with a plaque recognizing the Early College for their 100% graduation rate, a fete only accomplished by 22 other high schools in the state.

"A high school diploma is essential to success in life for today’s public school students. Graduating all of our students career and college ready has been a priority for me since I took the oath of office," Atkinson said. "I congratulate the principals, teachers and staff at these schools for ensuring that students stay on track for graduation and look forward to the day when all our high schools can boast a 100 percent graduation rate."

State Board of Education Chairman Bill Harrison also congratulated staff on their students’ accomplishments saying, "The State Board of Education is committed to ensuring that students receive a rigorous and relevant education that will prepare them for success after high school. Students should have options when they graduate and a high school diploma is the ticket to making that happen."

School districts and schools were recognized in four categories, described below. In each case, the rates referenced are for the four-year cohort graduation rates. This rate refers to the percentage of students who graduate from high school in four years or less. The rates are for the students who were identified as being in the graduating class of 2011.

North Carolina’s statewide four-year cohort graduation rate for 2010-11 is 77.9 percent, which is up 3.7 percentage points from 2009-10. This rate has improved every year since 2006 when North Carolina reported its first measurement of a cohort graduation rate.

We Need To Encourage Black Males To Enroll In The Edgecombe County Early College

Posted by Curmilus Dancy II (Butch) on March 8, 2010

Edgecombe Early College is such a unique opportunity for students to earn their high school diploma while also earning a two year associates degree. This is a five year commitment from students, but the end result is that they save time and money!  During the 5 years students are enrolled in high school and college classes all the while working toward their high school diploma and a two year degree.  The hope is that our students leave the Early College prepared to continue their education at a University or for the world of work, whichever they choose.  Our goal is to reach the most under served populations in Edgecombe County, and our particular interest in in those that are first generation college students.  Our program provides tons of support for students that are interested in putting in the effort!

The deadline has been extended to the 12th.  There will be a parent night on Tuesday evening March 9 from 5:30 until 8:00.

Note: I am challenging everyone especially churches, fraternities and others who knows some black males to ask them to consider enrolling at the EEC.
