Report: Dropouts down, crime up in NC schools – Source: WRAL

Raleigh, N.C. — The number of dropouts from North Carolina schools hit a record low last year, and school suspensions and expulsions also declined, officials said Thursday.

Reports of crime and violence in public schools statewide were up, however, officials said. (Read more)

Dropout Prevention Grants

The North Carolina General Assembly’s Committee on Dropout Prevention’s Budget Review Subcommittee will meet via Webinar on Monday, July 26, from 2-3 p.m. The purpose of the subcommittee meeting is to address any program or budget revisions that may have been submitted that month for dropout prevention grants. To listen in, go online to https://www1.gotomeeting.com/join/234878873 . Use your microphone and speakers (VoIP) – a headset is recommended. Or, call in using your telephone to 218-844-4932. The Meeting ID and Access Code is 234-878-873. The Audio PIN is shown after you join the meeting. PLEASE NOTE: Only subcommittee members can actively participate in the meeting. If you are a member of the public and have questions, please email those to Angela Ward at the email address below for appropriate follow-up.

The grant must be completed by 5:00pm on August 31st.  The application is completed ONLY on the web and must be sent before 5:00 or it won’t be accepted.

A partnering agreement must be mailed in or dropped off by Sept. 15th. The application will not be reviewed without this. It is considered incomplete without it.

The technical assistance meetings started Wed. July 14th and the next ones will be the 21st and the 28th along with the webinar as an option on the 28th.

State ranks No. 4 in school suspensions

Only three other states suspend a higher percentage of their students each year, according to the National Center of Education Statistics. Suspensions are particularly high in the Triangle. Wake County, which educates 9 percent of the state’s public school students, accounts for 20 percent of all long-term suspensions. In the 2007-2008 school year, the latest for which statewide statistics are available, Wake handled more than 1,100 long-term suspensions. (Read more @ News & Observer)

Dropout Prevention Schedules Meetings

The North Carolina Committee on Dropout Prevention will meet via Webinar on Monday, Nov. 2, from 2:00pm – 3:00p.m., to review the evaluation of 2007 and 2008 dropout prevention grant programs.  Members of the public who would like to attend may register at https://www1.gotomeeting.com/register/377029616 .

The North Carolina Committee on Dropout Prevention will also meet Nov. 16-18 at Wake Technical Community College, Western Wake Campus located in Millpond Village, 3434 Kildaire Farm Road, Cary. Agenda items include awarding 2009 grants and review of a procedures manual. The meeting will begin at 10:00a.m on Nov. 16 and 9:00a.m on Nov. 17-18.

Rocky Mount NC – Multiple agencies work to stop high school dropouts

It tickles the hell out of me how Racist White Folks and/or Safe Negroes criticize programs geared towards helping children but then if no one is doing anything they criticize that too. Oh well life goes on. C. Dancy II – DCN Publisher

With local dropout rates holding well above the state’s 4.97 percent, a handful of Twin Counties agencies are working to make sure that students like Northern Nash High School freshman Sheldavid Hardy have a chance to be more than a statistic. (Rocky Mount Telegram)
