Don Davis Appointed To Serve As Democratic Party 1st Congressional District Chair For Me Congratulations Is Not The Order Of The Day

Posted by Curmilus Dancy II (Butch) on February 19, 2011

I do not want to congratulate Don Davis but thank him for his willingness to serve out the unexpired term of Gwen Wilkins former 1st Congressional District Chair. Wilkins was elected several weeks ago to serve as the 1st Vice Chair of the NC State Democratic Party.

Don Davis a professional when it comes to serving as District Chair. Yes a professional. Don served the party well and in my opinion he has been the most effective chair since my involvement with the party since the early 90’s. I have served at the precinct level, county level and currently serves as a precinct chair. I have attended the district meetings almost regularly over the years. I have attended several state meetings over the years.

I was there when Don was elected to serve as the 1st Congressional District Chair several years ago. I believe I attended all of the district meetings under his tenure. I also followed him to several counties when he was responsible for carrying out the process in 2007 to appoint unexpired terms of NC House Rep. Howard Hunter Ahoskie NC and Senator Robert Holloman Elizabeth City NC whom both died within several hours of each other.

During the appointments House Rep. Ed Jones Halifax County decided he wanted to move over to the Senate to replace Holloman and he was appointed and still serving. Rocky Mount City Councilwoman Angela Bryant decided she wanted to replace Jones and she was appointed and still serving. I attended all of the meetings for the appointments from Halifax County to Gates County capturing the meetings and appointments leading up to the appointments. Don Davis did such a professional job that all of the appointments went smoothly without any problems and we all left unified.

I received a call a couple of weeks ago from a Pitt County native who wanted to let me know she was interested in the appointment to serve out the unexpired term of Gwen Wilkins. She brought up Don Davis’ name and I told her that if he was going to consider the appointment that I would have to support him because he served the district well in the past and that he would receive overwhelming support. She told me she was going to hang up and call him.

Today I told Don that someone had called me a couple of weeks ago and told me they were interested in the appointment. I told them I would have to support him if he was going to consider the appointment. I was unable to attend my county Democratic Party meeting a couple of weeks ago so I really didn’t hear about the meeting until about 3 days ago during a conversation with my Sheriff. I went to the meeting this morning not knowing who the person/s would be seeking the appointment and as soon as I walked in the community college I seen Don. I did not see the other person. After my conversation with him he told me the other person and he had had a conversation and she was going to support him. Don was appointed by acclimation since he had no opposition.

Don talked about communication being the key and that emails and social networking is very important. He wants to start a 1st Congressional District Fan Page on FaceBook. I say right on!!

Before I had to rush out to video a funeral I was able to address the chair. I asked that we reach out to young folks because there were none in the room. I also said we must tell folks who ask for our support that we are not going to support them but will support the person who we feel is the better candidate. I said we are all excited about this meeting appointing a 1st Congressional District Chair but if we are not organized at the precinct level and the county level it means nothing.

Don and I go way back because we have had some serious conversations about party issues and when he was seeking the appointment for the unexpired term of Senator Frank Ballance along with G.K. Butterfield. Don decided to withdraw his name.

Don served one term in the Senate and was defeated last year but his day will come again if he decide to run in the future.

Again thank you Don for representing me as the 1st Congressional District Chair. You have my support 100%.
