Dear NAACP Family,
DD Garrett (1914-2011) passed this morning with his hand on the Freedom Plow. Brother Garrett worked as a groundskeeper and a shoe repairman while going to N.C. College for Negroes in the 1930′s. He enlisted in the Navy when WWII began and led a strike of 25 Black sailors protesting discriminatory conditions. In 1946, he returned to his hometown of Greenville, set up an insurance and real estate business in the black community, and in 1949 ran for the Board of Alderman. He later was elected to the Pitt County Board of Commissioners, becoming the first African-American Commissioner in the county.
He served as President of the Pitt County NAACP Branch for nearly 20 years, and more recently served the State Conference of the NAACP as District 14 Director, sharing his great experience with the NAACP Branches in Carteret, Craven, Greene, Jones, Pamlico and Pitt Counties.
Brother Garrett has been a faithful servant to the cause of Justice and to the Mission of the NAACP. His hands on the Freedom Plow have helped prepare the fields for a new crop of Freedom Fighters to stand on his shoulders. Brother Garrett will be with us in spirit and mind, as we continue the fight.
As soon as we learn information for his homegoing service, we will send it out,
Sincerely,
Rev. Dr. William J Barber, II and Mrs. Amina Turner
