Announcement – Second Chance Lobby Day Tuesday, April 26

Posted by Curmilus Dancy II (Butch) on April 3, 2011

Second Chance Lobby Day

North Carolina Legislature-16 West Jones St. Raleigh, NC 27601

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011 9am-3pm

Theme: I’m for Second Chances

Community Success Initiative, along with  the  North Carolina Second Chance Alliance and our North Carolina Reentry Support Partners are very excited to have secured Tuesday, April 26, 2011 for the very first Second Chance Lobby Day—Theme: I’m for Second Chances –at the North Carolina Legislature (16 West Jones St, Raleigh, NC 27601) which will allow formerly incarcerated persons along with organizations and individuals who work with these individuals to gather for a day long (9am-3pm) series of training,  press conference, advocacy (walking the halls of their legislature, etc) and relationship building.

Several bills have emerged (and are still emerging) at the NC Legislature from the recent Reentry Studies of the Joint Select Reentry Study Committee, Governor Purdue’s StreetSafe Task Force, and the Justice Reinvestment Study. Although we are still working on the strategy on where exactly to place our advocacy efforts, we are excited just to be “at the table” given the long road of talking about the barriers that impact formerly incarcerated individuals in our state around the areas of jobs, housing, education and human services. Although we are still working out the details (stay on the lookout for ongoing updates/details) for this historic event, we wanted you to get it on your calendar, and begin to build momentum (carpools, buses, vanpooling, getting the word out, etc) for being at the North Carolina Legislature on Tuesday, April 26th

As you can imagine, this event will have lots of ‘moving parts” to make it a success. Food, packets, posters, media, advertising, sound systems, tents, etc will be needed. We will need all “hands on deck” as well as all resources as well to pull this off.  Your generosity helps to continue the work of Community Success Initiative/ Second Chance Lobby Day. You can use your debit or credit card to make a tax-deductible donation today, at www.communitysuccess.org  or you can still mail your check payable to Community Success Initiative to our address below. Please contact us with  other suggestions you may have to support this effort

Raleigh NC – Thank you

Posted by Curmilus Dancy II (Butch) on May 5, 2009

Thank you to all who attended this past weekend’s events to help make CSI’s 5th Anniversary a success.

Wow! What a group and such great information was exchanged, and new relationships formed

A special thanks to Wake County Judge Kristin Ruth, Roberta Meyers-Peeples from National H.I.R.E,

Bill Rowe from The NC Justice Center, Cash Michaels (production of the new CSI DVD that was unveiled, and will be available soon), CSI board and staff, and all of our friends and family, for making this past weekend a success. Oh and how can I forget Dr. Dumas Harshaw and the First Baptist Church family for being such great host at the Family Life Center.

Many of you who were unable to make it have asked if it is possible to still send your financial support

Answer: YES!!  You can make your tax deductible donations either on our secure online portal at www.communitysuccess.org ,

or by sending your donation payable to Community Success Initiative, and mailed to PO Box 61114, Raleigh, NC, 27661

Again thank you all for helping CSI for the first 5 years, and we look forward to many years ahead

Dennis

Raleigh NC – Community Success Initiative’s 5th Year Anniversary

Posted by Curmilus Dancy II (Butch) on April 26, 2009

Community Success Initiative’s

5th Year Anniversary Celebration

“Building Partnerships thru Relationships—Let’s Get to Know One Another”

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009 8:30am-3pm

Family Life Center
First Baptist Church
109 South Wilmington Street
Raleigh, NC 27601 (Downtown
)

(Parking directly across the street from the Family Life Center in the parking deck on Wilmington St, or around the corner on Morgan Street)

Come and celebrate with us as we highlight the first 5 years of what has been a great ride—many of you have been there from the start—others we have met along the way-either way, we are glad to call you family.

We are looking forward to you joining us for networking, exchanging knowledge and resources and of course, food and fellowship.

We kick off the day at 8:30am with registration and a very informal meet and greet until 9:30 (continental breakfast provided).  At 9:30am we will move into our Reentry Roundtable “teach in”, where we will be getting updates about our statewide reentry efforts by  state and nationally recognized policy and grassroot leaders as to how to get our recently filed Exoffender Reentry Study Bill (HB 527) pushed along in the North Carolina Legislature.

At 12 noon we will have our 5-year Celebration Luncheon, a time of reflection from all areas of our work, testimonials, celebration, awards, presentations, and entertainment.   We will also outline our vision for moving forward in the days and years ahead, not only in our Reentry work, but in the area of personal development and our youth work as well.

Our keynote speaker will be Roberta Myers- Peebles, Executive Director of Legal Action Center’s (based in New York City)National H.I.R.E (Helping Individuals with criminal records Reenter through Employment) Network, www.hirenetwork.org, a project aimed at increasing the number and quality of job opportunities available to people with criminal records by changing public policies, employment practices and public opinion, and a long time friend and mentor of CSI (see bio attached).

Wake County District Court Judge Kristin Ruth (if available) will also join us, and many others…and some surprises too…

I know…you are asking, and what will this all cost me?   No cost….. Well that is not exactly true… there is a catch.  We will let you in for free, but since this is our 5 year anniversary, we will be making an appeal for your financial support.  So throughout the day, look for us to beg for money, not only to help take our celebration “over the top”, but also to help us position ourselves for the next 5 years and beyond—And if you can’t attend, please support out work with your secure donations online at www.communitysuccess.org , or feel free to send us a check, payable to Community Success Initiative, and mailed to PO Box 61114, Raleigh, NC, 27661

CSI Pre –Conference Youth Provider Roundtable on Friday, May 1st 2009 11am-2pm

Location: Building Together Ministries, 1116 N. Blount Street, Raleigh, NC 27610 (Park and enter from the lower level of the building from the Popular Street side)

Thru CSI’s Y.E.S. Academy (Youth Empowerment School) www.communitysuccess.org/programs_youth_dev.html ,   we will bring together our youth provider network to share with each other around food and conversation. Feel free to take part in this conversation as we continue to empower our youth provider network (our focus here will be on organizations that serve or wish to serve youth age 13-21, who may be “on the bubble” or at risk of falling through the cracks of society)

Lunch provided (suggested donation $10)

OK, there you have it.  We are looking forward to a great time.

Please RSVP so we can get a handle on handouts, food prep etc. You can RSVP, or contact us with any questions by replying to this email or at dgaddy1@communitysuccess.org, or calling 919-834-7636, ext 11.

Along with the CSI staff, we are looking forward to seeing you on May 1 or 2nd or maybe both.

Raleigh NC – The National Criminal Justice Commission Act of 2009

Posted by Curmilus Dancy II (Butch) on March 28, 2009

The National Criminal Justice Commission Act of 2009 that I introduced in the Senate on March 26, 2009 will create a blue-ribbon commission to look at every aspect of our criminal justice system with an eye toward reshaping the process from top to bottom. I believe that it is time to bring together the best minds in America to confer, report, and make concrete recommendations about how we can reform the process.  See details of this legislation and other forums info at link below
