Lawmakers Agree to Patriot Act With No Oversight Revisions 19 May 2011 Congressional leaders reached a deal Thursday to extend the Patriot Act, the set of antiterrorism laws passed in the wake of Sept. 11, with no oversight revisions, leadership aides in both parties said. The plan would extend the law until June 2015. The most controversial elements of the antiterrorism law were set to expire May 27. The provisions give law enforcement access to troves of personal information, including business and library records, so long as a judge approves. They also let officials keep wiretaps on terrorism suspects who change numbers and permit surveillance of foreign terrorism suspects who appear to be acting on their own.

Tucson shooting victim involuntarily committed to undisclosed medical facility –Shooting victim taken into custody at taping of TV special 15 Jan 2011 A Tucson mass shooting victim was taken into custody Saturday after yelling "you’re dead" at a Tea Party spokesman during the taping of an ABC-TV town hall event. The Pima County Sheriff’s Office said J. Eric Fuller, 63, was involuntarily committed to an undisclosed medical facility, NBC News reported. The Associated Press said he was undergoing a psychiatric evaluation. He faces charges of threats and intimidation and disorderly conduct, according to Tucson TV station KGUN. (Read more)

George Bush thought 9/11 plane had been shot down on his orders [Well, Cheney's.] Memoirs reveal former US president gave order to shoot down any hijacked planes before United Airlines flight 93 crashed. 29 Oct 2010 George Bush initially believed the only plane not to reach its intended target during the 11 September attacks had been shot down on his orders, according to leaks from the former president’s [sic] memoir of his two terms in office. Bush reveals that he gave the order for any further suspected hijacked planes to be shot down after the first aircraft were flown into the World Trade Centre in New York during the 2001 terror attacks. He at first thought the crash of United Airlines flight 93 in Pennsylvania had resulted from this instruction, although it later emerged was spun that passengers had stormed the cockpit as hijackers flew the plane towards the Capitol building in Washington. 30 Apr 2009 Supreme Court Justice David Souter plans to retire, sources told NBC News Thursday night. Speculation about Souter’s plans began to swirl as the eight other justices were known to have hired the four law clerks who will work with them in the Supreme Court term that begins in October. Souter has been the lone holdout, hiring no one. A retirement by Souter, 69, would give President Barack Obama his first chance to nominate a justice and the next few months would bring Senate confirmation hearings.
