Gov. Perdue: Make a difference in a child’s life through reading

DSC_7733.jpgGov. Perdue, First Gentleman Bob Eaves and several cabinet secretaries took time from their schedules this week to read to school children.

“Read Across America” day is held every year on March 2, the anniversary of the birthday of Theodore Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss. Generations of children have discovered the joy of reading through his books.

Every year, to honor Dr. Seuss, the National Education Association sponsors Read Across America, with a goal of having every child in every school reading with a caring adult for at least 30 minutes.

Motivating children to read is an important factor in student achievement and creating lifelong successful readers. Research has shown that children who spend more time reading do better in school.

“Bob and I read to our grandchildren all the time,” Gov. Perdue said. “We cherish sharing the stories with them that we used to read to our children. We both know that an early love of reading can spark a life-long interest in learning.”

In Raleigh, Eaves read "Harry the Dirty Dog" to kindergarten students at Yates Mill Elementary. Gov. Perdue read "Oh, the Thinks You Can Think" to two kindergarten classes at Hunter Gifted and DSC_0015.JPGTalented Magnet Elementary in Raleigh.

Members of Gov. Perdue’s cabinet read to classrooms across the state.

Working together as a community to encourage our children to read can give them a chance to succeed in school and in life. To quote Dr. Seuss, "the more you read, the more you know. The more you know, the more places you’ll go."
