Posted by Curmilus Dancy II (Butch) on March 4, 2011

House Democrats and Gov. Beverly Perdue are trying to slow a charter school bill that passed the North Carolina Senate last week.

Opponents say the bill would damage traditional public schools and provide little accountability for the alternative schools.

Perdue told the State Board of Education on Thursday she’s worried the Republican-backed measure would strip regular public schools of resources and fail to provide adequate oversight for charters. (Read more)

Take Action. Now!

DPB Alert Alert Alert: Charter School Bill Will Costs Each Local Millions — Possibly Tens of Millions
Charter School Bill Will Costs Each Local Millions — Possibly Tens of Millions

Football receipts, lunch money, PTA fundraisers, & more will be shared with charters

NCAE needs you to Take Action on Senate Bill 8!

Is your school ready to cut a check to a charter school for the money generated from school cafeterias, athletic programs, school plays, or even PTA fundraisers? Well, your school might want to get used to it if Senate Bill passes in its current form.

And get this!  The charter schools receiving the money don’t even have to field a football team to get football money.  They don’t have to run buses to get your school’s transportation money.  They don’t have to serve food to get your school’s cafeteria money.

It’s a sweetheart deal and it’s wrong!

Senate Bill 8 (No Cap on Charter Schools) doesn’t just lift the cap on charter schools, it allows charter schools to take a portion of every dollar that comes to your school, including gate receipts for school plays and football games, cafeteria food, transportation, and even charitable gifts.

The bill provides funding to charter school students at the expense of students educated in
traditional public schools.  It’s money that may ultimately cost you your job, especially if you are a locally funded position or an ESP.
The bill gives charters funding for services they do not provide.
The bill will require that funds raised by your athletic or band booster clubs be shared with
charter schools.
School lunch money, both through the federal Free and Reduced Lunch program and throughyour supplemental cafeteria sales, will be required to be shared with charter schools.
The bill will make it unaffordable for you to continue operating a pre-kindergarten program
because funds for Head Start, Smart Start and More at Four all must be shared with charter
schools.
The bill will provide a “school choice” for some students but not for all.
Families of children who cannot afford to provide transportation or food service will be
precluded from enrollment in a charter school that does not offer those services.
The bill is likely to lead to re-segregated schools.
The bill will prevent you from being a good community partner because the rental fees you
collect on your buildings for community events must be shared with charters.
This is a back-door voucher whereby home schools and private schools can convert to charters to receive public funding.

We need you to take action today!  Use this alert to write your Representative.  Senate Bill 8 glided out of the Senate, and it awaits a hearing on Tuesday in the House Education Committee.  Tell your Representative to fix this bill!
