Joe Frazier, the Former Heavyweight Champion, Has Died
Joe Frazier, the former heavyweight champion whose furious and intensely personal fights with a taunting Muhammad Ali endure as an epic rivalry in boxing history, died Monday night. He was 67.
His business representative, Leslie Wolff, told The Associated Press in early November that Frazier had liver cancer and that he had entered hospice care.
Known as Smokin’ Joe, Frazier stalked his opponents around the ring with a crouching, relentless attack — his head low and bobbing, his broad, powerful shoulders hunched — as he bore down on them with an onslaught of withering jabs and crushing body blows, setting them up for his devastating left hook. Longtime central figure in the Democratic Party and former Wilson County Sheriff Wayne Gay has changed party affiliation. Gay is now a registered Republican, and the Wilson County Republican Party is happy to have him. (Paid Content)
Response: Mad as hell with Democrats because they supported a black man Calvin Woodard over him. Hosting a Republican candidate already, oh he is mad as hell with our current Governor Beverly Perdue as well. It appears that he has a problem with our black President as well, oh but that was the chair who said we are not better off 3 years later. Well I have not seen a difference when it comes to me personally. Curmilus Dancy II – The Political Agitator

Tarboro, N.C. — Attorneys quickly selected 12 jurors and two alternates Monday to decide whether a Rocky Mount man is guilty of murder. Opening statements are expected to begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday in the case of Antwan Maurice Pittman.
Pittman, 31, is charged with one murder — the 2009 death of Taraha Shenice Nicholson. But he is linked to the deaths of at least seven other women, and authorities have said they think he is a serial killer. (Read more)
Note: I would not have thought they would have selected the jurors that quick. Curmilus Dancy II – DCN Publisher

Dr. Adelphos (Del) Burns was sworn in as interim Superintendent Edgecombe County Public Schools Board of Education this evening. Dr. Burns will begin on tomorrow Tuesday, September 13, 2011. Dr. Burns was welcomed onboard and Dr. Wayne Talley was thanked by the board for his services.
I am looking forward to Dr. Burns doing some wonderful things during his stay here. Dr. Burns didn’t like the things that the Wake County Public Schools Board of Education chair and other board members were implementing while he was the Superintendent there so he decided to resign.
I have been following Wake County Public Schools for several years now and I believe that Dr. Burns did a wonderful job. My good friends in Wake County one being J. Ronald White President South Central Wake County NAACP and 4th vice president NC NAACP State Conference of Branches all have nothing but good things to say about Dr. Burns.
Although I spoke to Dr. Burns on tonight I want to welcome Dr. Burns to Edgecombe County.

Curmilus, We’ve just received terrible news: The state of Georgia has set Troy Davis’s execution date for midnight on September 21st, just two weeks from today. This is our justice system at its very worst, and we are alive to witness it. There is just too much doubt. Even though seven out of nine witnesses have recanted their statements, a judge labeled his own ruling as "not ironclad" and the original prosecutor has voiced reservations about Davis’s guilt, the state of Georgia is set to execute Troy anyway. Time is running out, and this is truly Troy’s last chance for life. But through the frustration and the tears, there is one thing to remain focused on: We are now Troy Davis’s only hope. And I know we won’t let him down. There are three steps you can take to help Troy: 1. Send a message of support to Troy as he fights for justice on what may be the final days of his life: http://action.naacp.org/LettersOfSupport 2. Sign the name wall, if you haven’t already. And if you have, send it to your friends and family. Each name means a more united front for justice: http://action.naacp.org/Name-Wall 3. Make sure everyone knows about this injustice. Spread the word on Facebook and Twitter (using the hashtag #TooMuchDoubt) so that Troy Davis’s story can be heard. We still have a chance to save his life, but only if people are willing to speak out against injustice. Today, the state of Georgia has declared their intention to execute a man even though the majority of the people who put him on the row now say he is innocent and many implicate one of the other witnesses as the actual killer. Now that a date has been set, we cannot relent. We must redouble our efforts. Thank you. Please act quickly and forward this message to all who believe the justice system defeats itself when it allows a man to be executed amid so much doubt. Ben Benjamin Todd Jealous |

Correction:
Please note that there was an error in the press release regarding the
naming of our interim superintendent. It was announced at the board
meeting held tonight (Wednesday) Aug. 24, in the release I said it was
announced Monday, Aug. 24. I apologize for the typo. Thanks!

Board to meet in Special Meeting Wednesday, Aug. 24 The Edgecombe County Board of Education will meet in a Special Meeting Wednesday, Aug. 24 at 7 p.m. in the Central Office Board Room in closed session to discuss the search for an interim superintendent and other personnel matters.
Note: Atleast this time they are mentioning that they will discus the search for an interim superintendent. The last closed session was held at Edgecombe Community College about 2 weeks ago. I attended the closed session meeting because I thought they were going to name an interim superintendent. It was so funny because when I arrived at the college the couple of people who were getting off work didn’t know it was going to be a meeting there. School was out so there were no classes and I only seen 3 people, 2 administrators and 1 facilities manager person.
I was the only person who attended the closed session along with Ann Kent Chair, Johnathan Bloomberg the board attorney, Dr. Evelyn Johnson, Evelyn Wilson Vice Chair, Janice Davidson and Faye Taylor. Keith Pittman was not present because his brother in law had died. Attorney Teresa D. Bryant was out of town on vacation. There were a couple of other people who attended and was allowed to go into closed session however I will not discuss that at this time.
I thought it was right interesting neither paper showed up. I have found it right interesting that since I advertised the meeting that I have not had one person to ask me about what happened at the meeting. Well maybe because I didn’t do a follow up story about the meeting, no video and no comments. There was a reason. I have not heard anyone talk about the meeting.
I attended the meeting without knowing what was going to take place in closed session since the announcement only stated they were meeting to discuss personnel matters. I thought with the rumors on the street that the board would appoint Dr. Lana VanderLinden as the interim superintendent and we would go home. Well I was way off base and I ended up staying there about 2 hours. Evidently I was wrong because there has not been any information communicated from the board about what actually took place in the meeting however mind you I was there and although I could not go into closed session, I am not ignorant to the fact of what was going on.
I have been told that a school system could not go on without a superintendent so therefore I guess they will name an interim superintendent on Wednesday night so that the school year will begin with an interim superintendent.
Okay now back to a previous post from yesterday when I talked about my concerns about closed session meetings. Atleast the Wednesday meeting you know they will be discussing an interim superintendent and when they come out of closed session they should say something about what took place such as interviewed candidates or whatever and the vote should be made known in open session. The other personnel matters ie: transfers, retirees, resignations and etc. I asked for that information after the closed session meetings years ago so I used to get that list after the closed session but now it is posted on the website the next day. That is good because now everyone can see it especially those who do not know about The DCN News Blog.
If you visit the ECPS website you will see that there is an announcement that read: Board of Education Appeals Committee to meet Monday, Aug. 22 The Edgecombe County Board of Education Appeals Committee will meet Monday, August 22, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. in the Central Services Office Boardroom #3 to hear 2 student transfer appeals. Well this is a closed meeting as well because this is confidential information just like personnel issues.
Oh well time to gear up for a new school year so who will be the interim superintendent?

Sources say Edgecombe County Superintendent Dr. Wayne Talley will be resigning effective the end of next month September 2011. There will be a meeting scheduled for Wednesday, August 3, 2011 7:00 PM.
When I first met Dr. Talley at the College Round-Up earlier this year I felt he would not be here long. I believe that the climate here is not a good fit for Dr. Talley. It is fact that he came into a mess when he entered the Edgecombe County Public Schools System. The good ole boys/girls have been riding him every since he has been here because they didn’t like the change that he brought forth.
I liked Dr. Talley however I never did go sit down in his office and as I have all the previous Superintendents and or interim Superintendents. I did see him in action at Conetoe Chapel Church when he did a presentation during a Sunday morning service. I felt at that time he was genuine and wanted what was best for all children.
Well I hate to see Dr. Talley leave so soon however a man has to do what a man has to do. Everyone can only take so much. I believe the good ole boys/girls pushed him to the limit and I don’t have a problem with him quitting if that be the case. The older I get the less I want to fight ignorant folks who want things to stay the same.
Oh well here we go again. I guess the good ole boys/girls will be trying to get the same person they pushed for during the past hiring of a Superintendent. I don’t have to tell you where I stand on that.
See you on Wednesday.

It is sad that the board continues to vote along racial lines I would think however I don’t know that to be true and just a guess. There are only 2 black votes to 4 white votes so therefore 1 white person did the right thing assuming that the 2 blacks both voted for Rev. Roy A. Gray.
Next on the agenda it was time to vote for the board chair and vice chair. Evelyn Wilson current chair made a speech that she was going to give the chair position to Ann Kent current vice chair so the nick picking games can be cut out and it will not have to be displayed for the chair position. Wilson asked the other board members to just vote for Kent. You must see the video to get the full effect of Wilson’s speech. It was so juicy that I don’t know where to begin to talk about it.
After the election of the board chair Ann Kent was elected with 6 votes and Attorney Janice Davidson received 1 vote. Evelyn Wilson was elected as vice chair with 4 votes, Attorney Teresa D. Bryant received 1 vote, Dr. Evelyn Johnson received 1 vote and Attorney Janice Davidson received 1 vote.
The agenda was approved with items added and one being Attorney Teresa D. Bryant asking to be placed on the agenda as a item to rescind her resignation to be voted on later.
Well there you have folks. The board did just what I expected them to do tonight. All those who voted for Edison is just crazy as hell because he campaigned on reducing class sizes. He didn’t answer the questions at the June meeting when they interviewed him. Damn what world is he living in and those board members that supported him?
After tonight I don’t know where this school board is going? I thought I could kind of follow them but now I don’t know. But what I do know I am going to continue to attend the meetings to see where the hell they are going. I do know they want the board to be a 5 – 2 white majority when the district is a black majority.
Dr. Johnson asked the board when were they going to come together as one because they don’t discuss anything and just vote and that was not right.
