ACTION ALERT!!
For All NC NAACP Members and Partners in the HKonJ People’s Assembly Coalition
First Racial Justice Act Hearing Taking Place in Fayetteville
Yesterday, the first hearing began under the two-year-old groundbreaking Racial Justice Act (RJA). Marcus Reymond Robinson is the first death row inmate to have a judge decide whether race played a role in his death sentence. The hearing is expected to take two weeks, with both the prosecution and defense calling multiple expert witnesses.
The Racial Justice Act’s sole purpose is to attempt to ensure race does not play a role in the application of a death sentence. The RJA is nationally recognized as the most progressive death penalty legislation in the South. However, as you know, it has been under attack by the extreme right wing ever since it was passed with the support of the NC NAACP, the HKonJ Coalition and others in 2009.
We ask that you show your support for the RJA by attending the hearing in Fayetteville! The hearing will reconvene on Thursday and Friday of this week (Feb. 2nd and 3rd) and is expected to continue through February 10th. It is critical that NAACP members and HKonJ People’s Assembly Coalition partners support the Racial Justice Act by attending the hearing as many days as possible, especially this Thursday and Friday! District Attorneys and other opponents of the RJA will attempt to crowd the courtroom, so we must show North Carolina that the NC NAACP and HKonJ People’s Assembly Coalition will not back down to the forces that would take North Carolina backward.
The hearing is being held at the Cumberland County Courthouse, located at 117 Dick Street, Fayetteville, NC. The hearing begins at 10:00 a.m. in Room 4A. There is public parking around the courthouse and also pay parking within short walking distance.
