2012 Women in Office Institute

 

Program Description

The Women in Office Institute is an intensive leadership program that prepares women to seek elected or appointed office. Participants will receive an introduction to what’s involved in public service work, including appointed and elected office.  Participants hone their leadership skills, prepare for political campaigning, and develop tools for effective and ethical public service. 

 

Curriculum

Session topics to include, but are not limited to:

 

Introduction to the Political Process

   Explores the current political situation in North Carolina, the status of women in politics, and personal political ideology.

Pathways to Public Service

   Develops your leadership profile and resume, and evaluates methods of dispersing your message to the public, including social media, television and print.

You as a Leader

    Reviews your personality (MBTI) and emotional intelligence (EI) assessment, and how to develop and utilize your strengths and understand your weaknesses.

 

Applying your Leadership Attributes

    Explores relationship dynamics with constituents and colleagues, and illustrates methods to effectively communicate with other figures and groups in the political arena

 

Featured presenters include state and local elected officials, professors, media experts, leadership trainers, noted political strategists, and successful Institute graduates. 

 

Who Should Apply

Women of all backgrounds, interests, and political affiliations who:

  • have a deep interest in public service in North Carolina and are exploring ways to turn that interest into action.
  • are knowledgeable about specific issues that affect their communities and want to learn how to shape that knowledge into action.
  • perceive themselves as leaders, as do others.

Dates & Location

The Institute will be held in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina on the William Peace University campus.  Residency is required, and participants must stay on campus throughout the entirety of the program.

 

Session I:           Thursday, June 28 through Sunday, July 1

Session II:          Thursday, July 25 through Saturday, July 28

The application process is selective, as enrollment is limited to 20 participants. Limited tuition assistance and scholarship opportunities are available for qualified participants. Regional Visioning Community Academy

WHO:

Residents in Edgecombe and Nash Counties and the City of Rocky Mount

 

WHAT:

OIC Rocky Mount, Rocky Mount/Edgecombe CDC, NCACDC and elected officials in Rocky Mount have worked together for the past two years on a campaign to persuade three jurisdictions, Nash and Edgecombe Counties and the City of Rocky Mount, to work together in an unprecedented regional visioning and strategic planning process (VSPP).

A key part of the VSPP, sparked by a jointly funded Competitiveness Assessment conducted by a renowned UNC Chapel Hill Business School professor, uses a visioning process that will feature Study Circles to bring everyone into a conversation to make decisions about our economic future in an open, democratic process.

 WHY:

In preparation for the Study Circles, the partners will hold a Community Academy, where we will:

• residents about the visioning process and the background information necessary to make them effective participants in Study Circles and other related events

• residents to participate and persist in the process by showing the potential for change

• an organized group of community activists and volunteers as a result of the process

• Pay special attention to how racism, ethnicity and poverty have historically impacted economic equality and opportunity in NC
