It was my honor to moderate the keynote panel at the 2011 Equality NC Foundation Conference on Saturday, because I was present to witness a powerful, incisive moment in the human rights movement as the Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II, president of the North Carolina NAACP, presented his open letter to those in attendance. The letter, released in September, represented a landmark call by the civil rights leader to all North Carolinians to reject the ballot initiative that would permanently enshrine bigotry and discrimination in the state’s constitution.
